The BIC Criterium 550 is a wood-cased hexagonal graphite pencil descended from the long-running Conte Criterium line (the Criterium name dates back to at least the 1930s) and now made under BIC ownership. Its graphite lead is bonded to the wood along the full length of the barrel for added resistance and easy sharpening, and the green-lacquered body carries a black dipped cap with a white ring that identifies the grade. Sold in eleven degrees from 4H to 6B, it is a general-purpose pencil used for writing as well as artistic and technical drawing. This specimen: Criterium 550 in grade 3H.
