HOUSE OF GRAPHITE

Daler-Rowney's Artists' Sketching range included a water-soluble graphite pencil sold in three grades — HB, 4B and 8B (chart codes S1-S3) — alongside the British brand's other artist-grade sketching media (drawing, smooth, charcoal and a plain graphite pencil). The graphite marks like an ordinary drawing pencil but dissolves with a wet brush to create washes and watercolour-like tonal effects, suiting it to sketching and mixed-media drawing. The pencils were cased in strong Californian (incense) cedar with a natural wood-stained finish; the Artists' Sketching line has since been discontinued and superseded in the catalogue by Daler-Rowney's 'Simply' and 'Graphic' pencil ranges.
