ARCHIVIST'S NOTES
The Mongol was Eberhard Faber's flagship yellow hexagonal pencil and one of the most popular writing pencils in 20th-century America, credited with helping make the yellow pencil the US standard. It was marketed as a business and school pencil "designed for lots of writing" - sold mainly in the everyday #2/HB grade but offered across a full range of eight degrees from 2B to 4H; the No. 482 was eraser-tipped with the line's distinctive brass-ringed ferrule and pink eraser, while the No. 480 was the eraser-less companion. The original Eberhard Faber (USA) line is discontinued, though Mongol-branded pencils were later produced abroad. This specimen: Mongol 482 / Mongol 480 in grade 4H.
