ARCHIVIST'S NOTES
The Mirado 174 was the Eagle Pencil Company's flagship yellow office writing pencil, descended from the "Mikado 174" introduced in 1906 and renamed "Mirado" during World War II; it later passed to Berol and then Sanford, which still sells the line as the Paper Mate Mirado Classic. It is a hexagonal cedar pencil finished in trademark yellow lacquer, with a "chemi-sealed" (later waxed) graphite core and an eraser ferrule (the ferrule-less variant was the model 172). It was sold across a range of office grades from No. 1 (2B, soft) up to No. 4 (hard), with No. 2 (HB) the standard general-writing grade.
This specimen: Mirado 174 in grade No. 4 (hard).
