ARCHIVIST'S NOTES
The Tombow 8800 is a Japanese wood-cased graphite drawing pencil introduced in 1936, its model number taken from the height of Mount Everest. Its lead was formulated to rival the leads of German manufacturer Stabilo and influenced other Japanese pencils for decades, before being succeeded by Tombow's 8900 pencil. A rare, pre-WWII pencil, the documented surviving example is grade No. 4.
This specimen: 8800 in grade No. 4.
