ARCHIVIST'S NOTES
The Staedtler Mars-Lumograph 2886 was the company's wood-cased graphite drawing pencil, introduced on 1 August 1930 as the successor to the Mars 1225 and renamed the Mars Lumograph 100 in 1967, so it survives today only as vintage/collector stock. It was sold across a wide hardness range, from the very soft Ex-ExB (Extra-Extra-Black, equivalent to today's 8B, whose softest cores contained carbon black rather than graphite) up to hard grades such as 7H. Older pencils are marked "Made in Bavaria" and later stock "Made in Germany"; it is the direct predecessor of the modern Mars Lumograph 100.
This specimen: Mars-Lumograph 2886 in grade 2B.
