ARCHIVIST'S NOTES
The Derwent Onyx is the brand's darkest graphite pencil, made from smooth dark graphite that lays down dense, jet-black tones the maker describes as darker than a Graphic 9B. It is sold in two grades, Medium and Dark, in a round, matt-black 8mm barrel with a non-crumbly 4mm core that sharpens to a fine point, with darker shades built up by increasing pressure. It is intended for detailed drawing, shading and expressive sketching rather than writing.
