ARCHIVIST'S NOTES
The Mephisto Writing 465 was a vintage hexagonal writing pencil from L&C Hardtmuth (the firm whose US operation became Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph, Inc.), made of aromatic incense cedar and fitted with an eraser in a "Kolor-Koded" red-topped ferrule. It was offered in several writing grades — No.2, No.2A (roughly a No.2.5 half-grade), No.3 and No.4 — and reviewers noted a dark, hard-wearing lead that held its point well. The line is long discontinued; the catalogued examples were made in the USA.
